"Der Bunte Geruch" (The multicoloured smell) is a German graphic novel by Roland Hildel, published by Shaker Media in January 2013. It tells the story of Jonas and Mia, starting with their first coincidental meeting and following them up to a point where the story is dominated by doubts and violence beyond comprehension. Roland Hildel’s approach towards drawing a book differs slightly from what is commonly known as "the rule".
His work is based on associations, so the greater part of his pictures preceded the text and even the basic story itself. And it is in the drawings rahter than the text where you will probably find his strength. His contrasting black and white style is kind of impressive and may be a restult of his negation of the "ligne claire". It reminds us of a number of American influences which of course isn’t bad company at all in the vast field of comic books. His website shows a large number of pages from his book which are composed as a combination of pencils and inks.
