I always envied people for their really cool stuff. Like everybody interesting has one of these designer lamps – what’s the name? “Lava Lamps”!!! And “Space Projectors”! MATHMOS, 1963 inventor of the lava lamp and other famous “lightshows” has now teamed up with Sheffield based graphic art duo TADO to create “Chuppi”. Though Mathmos has been responsible for many award winning ambient lights in the last 50 years, Chuppi is their first venture into the world of art toys. Mike and Katie of TADO actually designed Chuppi to be a perfect interactive child’s nightlight. But don't worry! If you don’t have kids you’ll still have an excuse to own it: It comes along as an adult’s collectable art toy. Basically it’s wireless, so you can install it anywhere to impress friends, dates and bosses. It can be set to change colours through the spectrum or stay put on one colour. Chuppi’s look and style is completely and almost infinitely customizable thanks to a set of reusable stickers coming along with the package. There are basically 18 characters, but hey! – there are quite a few possible combinations we are anxious to try out like picture #4! Mike and Katie, who as TADO have worked with brands like Nike, MTV or Kidrobot, graduated from Leeds Metropolitan University in 2002. They usually collaborate to produce graphics, animation, web design or designer toys. They say their “main challenge [for Chuppi] was coming up with a fun little guy that offered something a little bit different to the customizable toy market”. Well done!
